Installing Brushes into Paint Shop Pro

3 Nov 2006 > 93 Comments

This tutorial explains how to add brushes to Paint Shop Pro. It should work for PSP 8, 9, X, XI, X2 (and perhaps older versions of PSP).

1: Download brushes and unzip the folder (right click on the folder and select extract all).

2: In Paint Shop Pro and go to File > Import > Custom Brush, to open up the Import Custom Brush dialogue box.

ibipsp1.jpg

3: Click open on the Import Custom Brush dialogue box and open up the folder containing the brushes.

4: Select the brush at the top of the list, and holding down the Shift key, click the brush file at the bottom of the list, to select all the brush files.

ibipsp2.jpg

5: In the Import Custom Brush dialogue box select Add all, and press ok.

ibipsp3.jpg

Your brushes are now in your Brushes folder (My Documents > My psp files > Brushes).

6: To use your new brushes in Paint Shop Pro, create a New Image (File > New or Ctrl+N), and select the Brush Tool in the Tool Bar Palette.

Open up the brush tip drop down window, and select your new brushes.

Still having Problems?

Installing brushes into Paint Shop Pro can be problematic. Here are some further solutions that may help.

Thanks to Sara for this solution:

i’ve also found this out after some more fiddling with PSP 9. When you do all of the steps above, the .pspbrush file and the .pspscript files are seperated/moved. You need both of them together to properly import the brush. So, do this:

Follow all the steps above. If you do not see the brush in the brushes drop down window, you will find both the .pspbrush files and .pspscript files together in the PSP folder (Program Files>Jasc Software Inc>Paint Shop Pro 9). There are lots of files there, so you may need to do some searching. Move both the .pspbrush and .pspscript into a seperate folder OUTSIDE of the PSP folder. Then, in PSP, go to File>Preferences>File Locations>Add. Then, find the new folder you saved moved the .pspbrush and .pspscript to. Select it, press okay, then okay again. Your brushes should now load and be available for use.

That’s what I did and everything worked.

Hi, Sarah. Have you managed to follow all the steps of the tutorial?

I’m not sure why your brushes are failing to show up. Perhaps you could try restarting PSP, and see if that helps :)

I have a problem. I downloaded a whole bunch of Paintshop pro.9 brushes. So I slowly followed your steps, but when I click on my brush name, it says its unsupported. I also try looking for some brushes, but their not their. I saved some of my brushes in a fail, but when i’m importing my brushes, I go to my file, and none of my brushes are there! I’ve gotten so many tuts on how to create siggys and avys, but the only think that is getting in my way is not being able to use a brush! When I open my brushes, WinRAR shows up. I look around try to use them, but all it shows are images of the brushes!!! Please please help me =[

Ok nvm, I know how to work them. I don’t know what it means by holding down the shift key. When I import a brush, it says that the file already exists and i have to rename it. I don’t know what it means by rename, and i also don’t know what to do in step 4. .

Hi, thank you for the tutorial. When I try to upload my new brushes, it keeps telling me that the file name already exists. I’ve tried renaming them, but it doesn’t work. Any suggestions? I’ve tried restarting my PSP9, and that didn’t help. I’m not able to see my brushes at all, anywhere (other than the file folders outside PSP9). :/

    Any help is muchly appreciated!

Hi, Rachel. I’m not 100% sure, but it sounds like your brush variance settings are set for rotate.

To fix this, reduce the Jitter (%) to Zero.

To view the brush variance palette press F11 or go to View > Palettes > Brush Variance.

    Hope that fixes things :)

I’m not sure about psp 6. I know that there are quite a lot of differences between psp 7 and later versions.

Yeah, you need to buy any new version of Paint Shop Pro. You can also download a 30 day trial.

Sorry about the late response. I don’t know what the problem is. I’ve tried downloading various brush packs, to see if the same problem occurs, but so far, I haven’t had any problems.

If anyone knows what the problem might be, please leave a comment below :)

Update: Ok, I think I’ve worked it out. If you download the brushes file directly to the PSP Brushes folder, Paint Shop Pro seems to think the brushes are already imported.

You need to download the brushes outside of the PSP Brushes folder and then add them following the steps of the tutorial.

If that works let me know :)

So I know how to import them onto my computer and I could do everything up to step #6. I can’t find this “brush tool” in the tool bar palette. I have the paint brush, but that’s it. I use PSP Photo X2. The bar at the top that comes up when you click on paint brush is very similar to the one you show in your step 6, except the icon to the very far top left isn’t in mine. I really want to figure this out and I would greatly appreciate any help!

To start off, I have PSP 9. I have followed the steps TO THE LETTER on this guide. However, no brushes show up in brush tip drop down window except for the defaults. I saved them to a folder OUTSIDE OF both PSP 9 brush folders. After clicking “Add All” and then “OK”, the brushes show up in the general PSP 9 folder, not in the brushes folder. After all my other attempts had failed, I manually tried to move all of the brushes from the PSP 9 folder to the PSP 9>brushes folder. I then tried adding the custom brushes again, however, this time when I clicked add all and then ok, I got the message stating that this brush already exists. So, then, a final time I tried to move all the brushes to a brand new folder on my desktop. Did this, then tried adding the custom brushes again. Once again, no brushes showed up in the drop down window aside from the defaults. I have tried EVERYTHING everyone has said and have had no luck. Does anyone know what’s going on or what else I could try.

PS. I have shut down and restarted my PSP 9 numerous times - no luck. Also, I checked for updates, downloaded an update, shut down, restart, STILL NOT WORKING! >_<

I found this explanation which might be useful to someone having problems installing Paint Shop Pro brushes

sometimes PSP won’t show the new brush after you’ve installed it because of the cache file it creates to speed up the loading process. If that’s the case, go to the Cache folder under the PSP directory and delete the Brushes file. A new cache file will be generated the next time you open the custom brushes box.

I hope that may be of some help to someone :)

It was originally written for Paint Shop Pro 7, but it might still be relevant for later versions of Paint Shop Pro.

  57. Sara

Comment on June 7, 2008 at 3:53 pm

thanks for the article, mahud. I actually didn’t need to do what it said with the cache folder. instead, i followed it’s directions on adding a file location. Along with the two locations for brushes, I added the folder that my extracted brushes are in. Then, when i hit okay, the brushes load and show up right next to the defaults. Thanks!

i’ve also found this out after some more fiddling with PSP 9. When you do all of the steps above, the .pspbrush file and the .pspscript files are seperated/moved. You need both of them together to properly import the brush. So, do this:

There are lots of files there, so you may need to do some searching. Move both the .pspbrush and .pspscript into a seperate folder OUTSIDE of the PSP folder. Then, in PSP, go to File>Preferences>File Locations>Add. Then, find the new folder you saved moved the .pspbrush and .pspscript to. Select it, press okay, then okay again. Your brushes should now load and be available for use.

That’s what I did and everything worked.

    Hi Mahud,

I hope you don’t mind me contacting you? I’ve been searching round for ages trying to find your contact details with no avail so thought i’d post here to make sure i make contact. I’ve been having a bit of a hunt around online and I notice from you blog that you have an interest in innovative design and digital art and I thought you might be interested in some cool contemporary art activity I’m working on for Becks.

Beck’s have supported contemporary art for the best part of 20 years - lending emerging artists such Damien Hirst, Tracy Emin and Jake & Dinos Chapman a helping hand at key points in their career.

This year we have worked with the Royal College of Art to offer four promising artists the opportunity to exhibit their artwork on an unprecedented scale – having there artwork replace the Becks label on bottles nationwide in August. Once again, providing a foot-up for the next batch of Damien Hirsts.

I wondered if you would be interested in finding out more about the campaign? The winners and their works are well and truly under lock and key until Mid July. However, I can reveal to you the names of the winning artists, their biogs and some examples of previous work if you’re interested?

Please let me know what you think?

    Cheers

    James

Hello Mahud, Well I’ve had PSP9 for a while now. I preety much have fun, and learn by trial and error. I’ve installed it on a few puters I’ve had now, and each time I get different brushes. This is where it gets messy.. I have no prob d/l, extracting, and prompting to “add all”, its when it gets to that point that it gives me an error message saying that there are already brushes w “such and such” name. Now, I’ve tried re-naming the brushes, d/l brand new brushes, moving things…I think I’ve tried it all. And I have no idea what else to do. Some work, and some don’t. And I wanna dig my hands into it and be able to enjoy all the brushes I wanna d/l, ya know?! I have numerous ones, that I can’t do a thing with. SO..do you have any idea what this is?! And what I need to do? I know I’m doing the process right by d/l, extract, and transferring. What else could it be?? Thanks… <33 Jenn

Hi, Jen. I had similar problems myself when I first became a Paint Shop Pro user (I still use 9). I’ve never entirely figured it out, and yeah, it does get messy.

I haven’t really used brushes for a few years myself and an not really an expert, to be honest.

Did you check out Sara’s solution to some problems with brushes. You’ll find it at the bottom of the tutorial. Not sure if that will help out or not.

Comment on August 6, 2008 at 6:50 pm

I did…it seemed very tricky. I found out that there is 2 diff folders holding brushes. So that may be one of the issues. Cuz I moved them, and proceeded to do the rest, and I got more brushes now. Except, I still get the “name already taken” issue, and then when I boot it up again, I get this error message that I’m gonna send you. So browse through it, and see if you can help me to still figure this out. Weird even though it brings the brushes through, huh?

BUT…I am encountering another prob. It seems as though I d/l some folders and they are no where to be found, in the file I’ve been saving them to. The only way I’ve been able to find them, is because of my recent doc folder. And then I have to extract them and search. Is there such thing as having too much in one folder?? <33 Jenn

Hmmm, I’m not entirely sure but it looks like the brush file is unsupported by your version of Paint Shop Pro.

I kno this is the wrong forum and all..but I am trying to find a way to make a soft blend without using the freehand tool. I can not figure out that tool for the life of me! And I’m told that there are literally 100’s of ways to make a soft blend(lap one pic over the over but w/ a blend approach instead of just laying them upon one another). I have done them before, and I used a earaser tool. But its been a while and I can’t figure out how to do it the same way again. Could someone please help me out or point me in the right direction?? Thanks so much..<33

I have the same problems as many others here. When I tried to upload brushes onto my Jasc PSP 9 program, it says the file is unsupported. I had to restore my computer, and I saved my psp 9 brushes to a disc. They worked before, but now it says that they are not supported. I dont know why they will not work now. I have tried everything! So if you can help or have an article that may help, I would appericate it!!

If you can be any help at all it would be great. Thanks :)

Hi Zainaa. As far as I can remember you can’t mirror brushes (bearing in mind I haven’t used brushes for a long time), although you can rotate them. One suggestion comes to mind. If you want the brush mirrored or inverted, you could mirror (Ctrl+M) or invert (Ctrl+I)the layer, and then return it to normal after applying the brush.

Thank you, this helped me so much! Now I understand why all the downloaded brushes didn’t work… I just needed to import them! The only thing I don’t like is that I need to rename them, and that it costes so much time to import them; my PSP almost crashes when I try. Do you know if there is anything I can do about this problem?

Can I download brushes from DeviantArt? Or are those specifically for Photoshop?

Does anyone know of any sites that I can download brushes and use on Corel Paint Shop Pro XI?

Hi, I don’t know if you are still helping on this or not, but I need help. I have PSP8 and I’m using Windows 7. I download brushes, do what you said and export them, but they don’t show up in the drop-down brush list. I tried restarting my computer AND PSP8. I look in the folders and it says the brushes are there, but they never show up in the brush list! Please help meee :( If anybody knows how to fix this, email me fierypixel@yahoo.com

I too, have Windows 7, and was getting pissed off.

I found a solution: SAVE DL PSP brushes to your Brushes folder in your documents ——> PSP———-> Brushes4a7d3d609129a9296bf7ac0608c2097

Then, when you extract them, make sure you extract them to a different area where you will remember. I extracted the brushes to my desktop.

They worked! I hope you work it out too!
